Intel confirms that H410 and B460 boards won’t work with Rocket Lake-S processors

Intel has confirmed that existing entry-level H410 motherboards and mid-range B460 chipset solutions will not work with the upcoming 11th Gen Intel Core (Rocket Lake) processors. This feature will remain only for motherboards with the older Intel Z490 and H470 system logic chips.

Recall that Intel has also developed new 500-series chipsets for Rocket Lake-S processors – H510, B560, H570, and Z590. Intel partners have already started a gradual announcement of new products based on them.

Fresh motherboards based on H510 do not differ much from older models based on the H410 chipset. The latter can now support Wi-Fi 6 (depending on the motherboard model) but have lost support for the virtualization technology, announced for motherboards with the H410 chipset.

The difference between motherboards based on the B460 and B560 system logic is more significant. For the first time, Intel mid-range motherboards will be able to overclock RAM. Besides, solutions based on the B560 chipset lost support for RAID but gained support for PCI 3.0 1 × 16 + 1 × 4 configurations. Also, all motherboards based on the 500 series chipsets received PCI 4.0 support. But it is implemented by Rocket Lake-S processors and not by the chipset.

The manufacturer still did not say when exactly the 11th generation Core processors will be on sale. Intel previously indicated that the Rocket Lake-S series of chips are slated for the first quarter of 2021.
