Intel to share details on Xeon Ice Lake-SP processors on April 6

There have been reports on the Internet about an event planned by Intel on April 6, at which the Data Platform Group will talk about its plans in various areas: 5G, Internet of Things, AI, cloud, and HPC. Also promised a “first look” at systems based on the third-generation Intel Xeon Scalable processors, codenamed Ice Lake-SP.

The official public announcement of Ice Lake-SP has been postponed several times. The last time, according to sources, it had to be rescheduled due to a chip error. But, apparently, everything is working out – a company representative said in March that 115 thousand new generation processors had already been delivered to key customers. And some server hardware manufacturers have already talked about new platforms with Ice Lake-SP. Therefore, the announcement should be expected shortly.

Intel spoke about the architecture and some new products’ features back in August last year and since then has occasionally reported new details. For example, when solving some HPC tasks, 32-core Ice Lake-SPs promise to be faster than 64-core AMD EPYC Rome. The processors will receive 8 channels of DDR4-3200 memory with Total Memory Encryption (TME), PCI Express 4.0 support, new SGX features, and hardware protection for the platform.

The new processors will form the basis for a broader ecosystem that she plans to develop in the future. This system also includes other products, based on which complex solutions will be offered, including a full software stack: GPU, FPGA, ASIC, Optane DCPMM, SSD, AI accelerators, network solutions. Thus, the company will fight with the recently introduced AMD EPYC Milan, which can offer up to 64 cores per socket.
