By today’s standards, this is a fairly modest solution for the industry, but Intel’s goal is not dominance in this market. Tunnel Falls is designed for scientists and researchers working with quantum processors and computing. According to the press release, academic institutions do not have the equipment to mass-produce any chips. With Tunnel Falls, researchers can start experimenting and researching right away, instead of trying to fabricate their own solutions. As a result, a wider range of experiments becomes possible, including studying the fundamentals of qubits and quantum dots and developing new methods for working with devices with multiple qubits. In addition, to advance quantum computing, Intel has partnered with the University of Maryland Physical Science Laboratory,

Tunnel Falls is Intel’s first silicon spin qubit chip specifically for the research community. For its production, the usual 300 mm plates are used.

Intel believes silicon spin qubits are superior to other qubit technologies. As small as a single transistor, such a qubit is 1 million times smaller than other types of qubits around 50 x 50 nanometers, potentially allowing for efficient scaling of chip complexity.
