Apple yesterday released and quickly removed the first iOS 14.3 beta for developers. However, the editors of 9to5Mac managed to install the new beta version and said that iOS 14.3 adds Apple’s ProRAW photo format to the iPhone 12 Pro.

After the release of iOS 14.3, you can enable this option in the settings under “Camera”> “Formats”. This is where the new Apple ProRAW switch is located. Apple warns that each ProRAW file is approximately 25MB in size.

This format stores more information and dynamic range, giving you additional flexibility when editing exposure and white balance. After enabling this option, you should see a new RAW switch in the upper right corner of the Camera app. You can tap the switch to enable or disable the ProRAW photo creation function. This feature is only available on iPhone 12 Pro and iPhone 12 Pro Max.

Apple announced the ProRAW format last month alongside the iPhone 12 Pro and iPhone 12 Pro Max, stating that the format will be available in a future software update. ProRAW’s goal is to combine Apple’s computer photography features like Deep Fusion and Smart HDR with the traditional benefits of RAW shooting. Generally, RAW shooting gives you more control over adjusting details such as color, detail, and dynamic range of an image.

ProRAW gives you all the standard RAW information as well as Apple Image Pipeline data. This way, you can start editing with the noise reduction and multiple exposure settings already set, and you have more time to adjust the color and white balance.
