A clear demonstration of the benefits of the new format
The recently released beta version of iOS 14.3 adds Apple’s ProRAW photo format to the iPhone 12 Pro, and the following video, posted on YouTube’s A Better Computer, demonstrates the benefits of night mode shooting with ProRAW.
iPhone 12 Pro ProRAW tested in night shots
Using several photographs as an example, the author of the video confirmed that using ProRAW allows you to get much more detail in the post-processing of the image. You can adjust the exposure, dim the lights and make the photo much more beautiful. However, when you save a photo in JPEG format, image details are often lost without the possibility of recovering them.
Apple warns that each ProRAW file is approximately 25MB in size. This format stores more information and dynamic range, giving you additional flexibility when editing exposure and white balance. According to Apple, ProRAW allows you to combine Apple computer photography features like Deep Fusion and Smart HDR with the traditional benefits of RAW shooting.
After installing the iOS 14.3 beta, you can find the Apple ProRAW toggle in Settings under Camera> Formats. Once activated, it appears in the upper right corner of the Camera app.
