It will improve the quality, reduce power consumption and cost of displays
Japan Display Inc (JDI), which supplies OLED screens for Apple Watch devices, said it is in talks with customers about a possible joint investment in next-generation OLED displays.
Japan Display develops new OLED technology
JDI is developing a technology that will improve quality, reduce power consumption and cost of displays. Although the development has not yet progressed far enough to be able to finally determine the feasibility of its implementation in mass production, the Japanese manufacturer has already begun investment negotiations. The company does not name partners in negotiations.
According to JDI, the new technology is different from the vacuum deposition used by competitors, and full-scale production of the new technology in Japan or overseas could begin in 2022. Implementation in mass production will depend on the ability of JDI to obtain a sufficiently high percentage of product yield and on the needs of customers by the time the technology is ready.
