Largest smartphone market shrinks, but Huawei pushes competitors

The International Data Corporation (IDC) has published the latest statistics on the Chinese smartphone market, the largest region for the sale of smart cellular devices.

The pandemic continues to have a negative impact on the industry. In the second quarter of this year, 87.8 million smartphones were sold in the Middle Kingdom, which is 10.3% less compared to the second quarter of 2019, when 97.9 million devices were shipped.

However, as analysts say, the PRC market is gradually recovering from the impact of the coronavirus. Thus, in the first quarter, the decline was much more significant – 20.3%.

The undisputed leader in the Chinese smartphone market is Huawei with a 45.2% share. Despite sanctions from the United States, this company continues to crowd out competitors: a year earlier, its share in the PRC was 37.0%.

Places from second to fourth were taken by three more local companies – Vivo, OPPO and Xiaomi, the result of which at the end of the last quarter was 17.1%, 16.0%, and 10.4%, respectively. Apple closes the top five with 8.3%.

Curiously, the South Korean giant Samsung, whose devices are very popular in other regions, is not among the leaders in the Chinese smartphone market.
