Street Fighter II, which shaped and popularized the fighting game genre in many ways, is considered one of the greatest video games of all time. The Super Famicom (SNES) version, which debuted in June 1992, was the mega-hit of its time, selling 6.3 million copies worldwide.

Street Fighter II has made its way into mainstream culture, with characters like Ryu, Ken, Gail, and Chun Li appearing in various works over the years. For example, mention may be made of the 1994 action movie Street Fighter, starring Jean-Claude Van Damme and Raul Julia, or a whole series of Street Fighter anime series.

In Russia, many got acquainted with Street Fighter II through dubious unofficial fakes for the NES (or Dendy – under this name in our area, then a hardware clone of the famous 8-bit Japanese console was sold). Street Fighter II’s explosive popularity and the excellent combat mechanics for that time are well documented – those wishing to plunge into the story of the game can check out the Capcom film dedicated to the 25th anniversary of the game.

Today Capcom continues to develop the famous fighting game series, with rumored to be developing Street Fighter VI for two generations of PC and consoles.
