Looks like the beta version of Huawei Harmony OS 2.0 is built on Android

Earlier this month, Huawei made the first beta version of Harmony OS 2.0 available to developers, embarking on a lengthy transition to its own software platform. And although it is positioned as a vendor development, it seems that in its current form, Harmony OS 2.0 is still based on Android.

One of the developers created a simple application called Hello World that targets the old Android KitKat 4.4.4. When trying to run it on virtual devices with Android and Harmony OS, almost the same messages appeared, saying that the application might not work correctly. The difference was that in the first case the Android platform was mentioned, and in the second – Harmony OS. This fact indicates the proximity of operating systems.

It also turned out that the Android Debug Bridge can be used to interact with the Huawei platform. Based on this, it is assumed that Huawei used the Android platform as the basis for the first beta version of Harmony OS 2.0.

The source says that even if Huawei continues to use Android now, this is likely to change in the future. Earlier, Huawei said that it would use the Android Open Source Project in the transition phase. However, there was no mention in the Harmony OS press release that the vendor was using Android or AOSP, but such information could appear in some other developer documents.

Huawei officials have so far refrained from commenting on the use of Android as the basis for the first beta of Harmony OS 2.0.
