Marjorie Taylor Greene confronted with extensive censure effort due to conspiracy theories and unusual conduct
On Tuesday, Rep. Becca Balint, D-Vt., introduced a comprehensive resolution to censure Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene, R-Ga. The resolution, brought forward by the freshman lawmaker, accuses Greene of racism, homophobia, antisemitism, and Islamophobia. It compiles numerous instances of her social media posts, likes, statements, and appearances, where she has endorsed conspiracy theories, insulted elected officials, and engaged in other objectionable behavior.
The resolution covers a wide range of issues, including Greene’s past comments on the COVID-19 pandemic, her involvement in the January 6, 2021 attack, disparaging remarks about fellow members of Congress, and criticisms of President Joe Biden. Additionally, it points to a recent incident where Greene displayed sexually explicit pictures of Hunter Biden, the son of President Joe Biden, during a hearing.

In response to the censure push, Greene tweeted dismissively about fundraising and expressed doubt about the accuracy of the allegations. However, the resolution has been introduced to address what Balint views as Greene’s unacceptable conduct that should not be normalized within Congress.
It’s essential to note that censures do not result in the removal of representatives from office. Possible punishments may involve removing a member from committees or initiating an investigation into the lawmaker’s actions, among other measures.
Previously, Greene had her committee assignments stripped in 2021 due to threatening social media posts. She was later reinstated after Republicans regained control of the lower chamber during the 2022 midterm elections.
This censure effort comes in the aftermath of House Democrats’ attempt to censure Rep. George Santos, R-N.Y., for falsifying parts of his background and deceiving voters in the 2022 elections. Moreover, Republicans had censured Rep. Adam Schiff, D-Calif., for his claims about former President Donald Trump’s connections to Russia.
