The deal was struck between MEG and its contractor Qingdao Chengyang Medici, and a joint venture between China’s Didi Chuxing and electric vehicle manufacturer BYD. Contract deliveries will begin in the first half of next year.

Ideanomics said in a statement that the vehicles are intended to be deployed in many Chinese cities with a service that will allow passengers to call cars through the Didi Chuxing app. In response to news of the deal, its shares soared 22%.

Meihao Chuxing (Hangzhou) Automobile Technology, a joint venture between passenger delivery giant Didi Chuxing and Shenzhen BYD, released the D1 in November this year, the culmination of two years of development.

According to the company, it is the world’s first dedicated electric taxi vehicle equipped with a driving assistance system and communication with a fleet management system, which helps operators of large fleets to monitor the status of vehicles.
