Microsoft began the next stage of distribution of Windows 10 (2004)

Microsoft has launched the next stage of distribution of the operating system Windows 10 (2004), which is also known as Windows 10 May 2020 Update. According to updated documentation on Microsoft’s website, the new version of Windows 10 is now available to significantly more users. Among other things, computers running versions of Windows 10 that are nearing the end of support will receive the update.

The message says that Microsoft uses a special algorithm to identify devices on which older versions of the software platform are installed. This applies to computers running Windows 10 (1809) and Windows 10 (1903), which end of support on November 10 and December 8, respectively. In the coming months, computers with the mentioned OS versions will be able to upgrade to Windows 10 (2004).

Obviously, Windows 10 (1809) computers will get the forced update first. This is due to the fact that after the end of the support period, computers with an outdated OS version will no longer receive security updates, which will make them more vulnerable to malicious attacks. This does not apply to the corporate and educational versions of the OS, since their support will end only in May 2021.

The message also notes that the algorithm for determining the OS version installed on users’ computers will be used at all stages of the deployment to ensure uninterrupted updates for devices with different versions of Windows 10. As for computers with Windows 10 (1903), in the near future, automatic delivery of Windows 10 May 2020 Update is unlikely to happen. Most likely this will happen closer to the date of the end of support for this version of the platform.
