Updated Edge automatically installed the Office Web Apps Collection on select devices

Microsoft has begun a bizarre experiment on Windows 10 users. A new “feature” adds Office Web applications to the device without the user’s direct permission.

Office applications of the Office suite are already well represented on Windows, but it’s no secret that Microsoft strives to promote web applications as well if the user does not use the paid versions for some reason.

Microsoft has recently updated the stable version of the proprietary Edge browser based on the Chromium engine for Windows 10.

The updated browser silently installs four Office web applications on select devices without the knowledge of users and automatically creates shortcuts for Excel, Outlook, Word, and PowerPoint in the Start menu.

Apparently, this “feature” is implemented only for some users participating in the Windows Insider program, but it is also found on the devices of ordinary users not involved in testing.

However, if these web applications are not needed, users can uninstall them at any time.
