Microsoft reveals characteristics of cheap Xbox Series S: CPU like Series X, but GPU – three times weaker

Microsoft has revealed details about the specifications of the Xbox Series S, the youngest next-generation console in the Xbox family. It will be released on November 10 along with the Xbox Series X and will cost € 299. Early leaks that the Series S differs from the Series X only in the GPU and the amount of memory have been confirmed.

As you know, Xbox Series S is suitable for games in 1440p resolution up to 4K up to the corresponding screens. In the junior console, Microsoft uses the same processor as in the Xbox Series X – an eight-core chip based on the Zen 2 architecture with a frequency of up to 3.6 GHz (the Xbox Series X has a slightly higher CPU frequency – 3.8 GHz). According to the program manager Xbox Jason Ronald (by Jason of Ronald), «the main difference between Xbox Series X and S is the graphics processor”.

In the video, Liz Hamren, head of platform development and devices for Xbox, said that the Xbox Series S provides computing power four times more than the Xbox One, and supports a frame rate of up to 120 frames per second. “After talking with our customers, we realized that many of our fans are favoring frame rates over resolution, so we wanted to create a console that didn’t require a 4K TV,” she said.

Microsoft did not go into details of the Xbox Series S GPU, but the console is known to have 20 compute units clocked at 1565 MHz (roughly 4 teraflops of performance). For comparison, the Xbox Series X has 52 blocks and a frequency above 1.8 GHz, which gives 12 teraflops. According to the corporation, the power of the junior novelty is enough to play in 1080p or 1440p resolution. In addition, the Xbox Series S has support for AMD RDNA 2 features, including hardware ray tracing.

Another difference between Xbox Series S and Xbox Series X is the amount of RAM. The junior console contains 10 GB of GDDR6 memory at a speed of 224 GB / s. The older one is 16 GB GDDR6 with a bandwidth of up to 560 GB / s. The SSD (custom NVMe) in the Xbox Series S will be similar to the Xbox Series X but at 512GB instead of 1TB.

Last but not least, Microsoft said that, aside from resolution, game performance on Xbox Series S would be comparable to Xbox Series X. For example, Gears 5’s multiplayer shooter would run at 120fps on both consoles.

How much Xbox Series S will cost in Russia has not yet been announced.
