$1.7 billion allocated since the beginning of the year

General Motors is investing more than $1 billion in its two factories located in Flint, Michigan. This massive injection of money is aimed at stimulating the production of future next-generation heavy SUVs with internal combustion engines.

While the company did not provide specific details on future models that will replace the current Chevrolet Silverado HD and GMC Sierra HD/Denali, General Motors has disclosed the investment allocation for the Flint Assembly and Flint Metal Center facilities in Michigan.

New cars with internal combustion engines will be produced for many more years.

Approximately $788 million will be allocated to the Flint Assembly investment, which will cover the expansion of the body shop building and general assembly line. These investments also include the purchase of new tools and equipment. In addition, an additional $233 million will be invested in the Flint Metal Center to develop new dies, upgrade presses and purchase new equipment.

Even with a focus on a future involving electric vehicles, General Motors says the new investment highlights its “commitment to continue providing customers with a strong portfolio of ICE vehicles for years to come.” Sales of GM heavy-duty pickups are up 38% in 2022 compared to 2021, and the Chevrolet Silverado HD has become a bestseller in its segment.

Since the beginning of 2023, GM has announced more than $1.7 billion in investments in Flint facilities, in addition to more than $30.5 billion directed at its US plants over the past decade.
