The problem is a defective steering rack

Honda has announced a recall of 176,410 Civic vehicles from the 2022-2024 model years. These vehicles are equipped with a steering rack that may cause the front wheels to turn too much and cause an accident.

The automaker first became aware of the problem in July after its supplier Hitachi Astemo Americas, Inc. warned him of a possible manufacturing defect. In September, Honda investigated the issue and determined that the issue could impact occupant safety.

The power steering racks were assembled with the wrong travel length. This means they may allow the front wheels to turn too much, which can cause damage. If the wheel moves too far, the tire may be damaged by the lower control arm.

If a tire is damaged, it may puncture, increasing the likelihood of an accident. On the other hand, if your Civic is equipped with snow chains and if this damages the tie rod end, the vehicle’s handling may be impaired, which will also increase the likelihood of an accident.

Honda will send letters to owners of four- and five-door Civics on December 4th. The company will ask them to return their vehicle to the nearest Honda dealer where it will be inspected and the electric power steering rack will be replaced if necessary.
