HMD Global revived the Nokia brand in the smartphone market more than three years ago, and it immediately became clear that people remember the cult Finnish company and were ready to purchase devices with this brand, albeit released by a completely different manufacturer.

Sales quickly grew to 4-5 million smartphones in the quarter and remained at that level for some time. However, last year, after a record second quarter for the brand, a recession began. If in the second quarter of 2019, Nokia sales amounted to 4.8 million smartphones, then in the fourth quarter – only 2.8 million.

And the results of the first quarter show that the recession is continuing. In the first three months of this year, sales amounted to only 1.7 million smartphones. With this indicator, the Nokia brand took 13th place in the list of the largest suppliers, which corresponds to 1% of the market. However, it should be understood that the main cause of the fall in the first quarter was probably the coronavirus pandemic.

Indirectly, this is proved by sales of ordinary Nokia mobile phones, which have halved from 15 to 8.6 million, while sales of these products from the brand as a whole have been stable for more than two consecutive years.
