It may appear as early as next year.
The 12VHPWR connector with the release of the GeForce RTX 4090 did not perform well. And although the problem did not have any mass character, and other models of video cards with 12VHPWR were not affected, Nvidia is already working on a new power connector.
It is called 12V-2×6 and will stand out with increased security. The design should include more standardized testing to ensure that each version of this cable is designed to specifications.
Nvidia is already working on a 12V-2×6 connector
Crucially, this new connector is part of the PCIe Base 6 specifications and not some proprietary Nvidia solution. The new connector version is also part of the CEM 5.1 specifications proposed by the PCI SIG for the ATX 3.1 specifications. In addition, physically 12V-2×6 is fully compatible with 12VHPWR. True, due to other characteristics, a software update may be required for full compatibility.
As for the very security, among other things, the length of the contacts will be changed in the new connector.
Nvidia is reportedly evaluating two connector designs with PCI-SIG. The project is already at an advanced stage, and the new connector may appear on video cards as early as next year.
