Only the older iPhone 12 Pro Max will support the faster 5G mmWave

Only the older iPhone 12 Pro Max will support the faster 5G mmWave

Only one of the new iPhones that Apple will unveil this fall will support faster millimeter-wave (mmWave) data transmissions of fifth-generation (5G) networks. A source in the wireless industry told Fast Company.

According to him, all-new iPhone 12 models will receive support for the more common band up to 6 GHz (Sub-6), which is inferior in data transfer speed to mmWave technology. And only the largest model of the new series with a 6.5-inch screen, which may be called the iPhone 12 Pro Max, will also support 5G millimeter-wave networks.

The source claims that only the largest iPhone of the new series has room in the case for a special antenna design needed to support millimeter waves and to accommodate a larger battery since the operation in the millimeter-wave is more energy efficient.

In addition, only the US, South Korea, and Japanese versions of the iPhone 12 Pro Max will support 5G in the millimeter range.

According to a study of 5G networks in the US this summer by OpenSignal, the average download speed on 5G networks is about 51 Mbps, while the average download speed on 4G networks is 29 Mbps. This is because US wireless carriers now offer much more Sub-6 coverage than the mmWave range. The Sub-6 service, although slower, allows you to support a large number of users per base station and has a large coverage, so it is more cost-effective.

Apple is expected to announce two high-end iPhones soon – the iPhone 12 Pro Max and the 6.1-inch iPhone 12 Pro. The company will also introduce two less expensive models – the 5.4-inch iPhone 12 and the 6.1-inch iPhone 12, Max.

In turn, a source of Fast Company claims that an inexpensive 4G-smartphone of the iPhone 12 series can be announced next spring, which is an updated version of the iPhone SE, released in April last year.
