OPPO has come up with a smartphone with a two-faced retractable camera

The Chinese company OPPO has proposed another non-standard version of the camera system in smartphones: this time, we are talking about a retractable module in which there are no image sensors.

Information about the development is published on the website of the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO). Resource LetsGoDigital, together with the designer Concept Creator, presented the device’s renders, formed based on patent documentation.

The idea is to equip the pull-out unit hiding in the upper part of the case with a special mirror system. These will direct light to image sensors that are stationary inside the apparatus.

The reflector unit consists of two independently controlled modules. One of them can look at the user, the other in the opposite direction. This allows you to take both regular and selfies. For ordinary shooting, both modules can be used at once.

As conceived by OPPO, mirrors will also be able to deflect light from the side directions. This will produce 360-degree panoramic images.

This design will save the display from a notch or hole for the front camera. There is also no need to place camera elements on the back panel, which will protect the optics from possible damage.

Users can control the camera system using a button on the body. Also, it will be activated automatically when the corresponding application is launched.

It is not yet clear when the device with the described design may appear on the commercial market.
