OPPO patents a smartphone with Li-Fi: ultra-fast communication with LEDs will complement Wi-Fi and Bluetooth

Resource LetsGoDigital reports that the Chinese company OPPO is exploring the possibility of creating a smartphone with support for high-speed wireless Li-Fi technology.

Let us briefly recall the principle of operation of the named system. The essence of Li-Fi is to change the luminescence parameters of LED lamps at a very high speed. This process is controlled by a special chip that encodes information in this way. To register light beams, a photodetector is used, on the basis of which the reverse data conversion is performed.

Light fluctuations remain invisible to the human eye. The range is up to 10 meters, and the data transfer rate can theoretically reach 20 Gbps, which is significantly faster compared to Wi-Fi.

Information about the Li-Fi-enabled OPPO smartphone has been published on the website of China’s National Intellectual Property Administration (CNIPA).

The images show that the sensors of the Li-Fi system are installed at the top and on the back of the projected device. Moreover, the upper sensor is located on the retractable module of the front camera. The rear camera is a two-piece design, but a configuration with three or four optical blocks can also be used.

Observers believe that if released, the novelty could enter the Reno family. However, nothing has been reported about the possible timing of the appearance of a Li-Fi smartphone on the commercial market.
