Photo of the day: gloomy sun with ominous flares

The National Aeronautics and Space Administration of the United States (NASA) has presented a unique image of the sun: in the picture, our star looks like an ominous dark disk with bright swirls.

The image was generated based on information from the Solar Dynamics Observatory (SDO), a spacecraft launched back in February 2010.

The image combines the results of solar observations in two wavelength ranges. Bright areas are areas of increased activity that release large amounts of energy.

In general, in the image, our star looks very unusual, resembling a pumpkin lantern, which is especially important in light of the recent Halloween.

We add that the Solar Dynamics Observatory was created within the framework of the Living With a Star program, the purpose of which is to obtain information about solar-terrestrial connections that directly affect people’s lives.

The Parker Solar Probe, launched in 2018, is also used to explore the Sun. This device has already been able to approach our star at a record close distance.
