Photo of the day: hourglass of universal scale

The US National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) has presented an image of an unusual object in the vastness of the Universe – a formation with the designation M1-63.

The image was transmitted to Earth from the NASA / ESA Hubble Space Telescope. This observatory, we recall, has been operating for over 30 years: the launch was carried out on April 24, 1990, with the help of the STS-31 Discovery shuttle.

M1-63 is a bipolar planetary nebula located in the constellation of the Scutum. The structure looks like an hourglass.

It should be noted that planetary nebulae are composed of an ionized shell of gas and a central star, a white dwarf. Such structures are formed during the ejection of the outer layers of red giants and supergiants at the final stage of their evolution.

At the heart of M1-63, as noted, lies a binary star system. She is responsible for the formation of the structure in the form of an hourglass or butterfly wings.

We also add that planetary nebulae have nothing to do with planets. This definition is historically related to how such objects look in a small telescope.
