According to numerous rumors and leaks, this fall, Sony will release an updated PlayStation 5 with a removable optical drive. The new data suggests that the PS5 Pro will be released about a year after that.

Well-known journalist and insider Tom Henderson revealed that, according to his own sources, the PlayStation 5 Pro has been in development since early 2022 and is codenamed Trinity. Most major game development studios will receive the kits by the end of November this year.

The most important thing is that there is also a main technical characteristic. The GPU of the new set-top box will receive 30 WGP blocks. This means 60 CUs or 3840 stream processors. For comparison, the original PS5 has 2304 stream processors.

While maintaining roughly the same frequencies, this means that the performance of the PS5 Pro will be about 17 TFLOPS. However, although it is customary to evaluate consoles by this parameter, it has a very conditional relationship to gaming performance. But we can remember that the Radeon RX 6800 has exactly the same 3840 stream processors with the same RDNA 2 architecture. That is, the PS5 Pro as a whole can be compared with this video card, while the PS5 is comparable with the RX 6700. Of course, such a comparison is also conditional for a number of reasons, but still it generally has the right to life. It is also possible that the PS5 Pro will receive a chip with a GPU based on the RDNA 3 architecture, and then the gain due to the new architecture will be added to the increase due to more stream processors.

In any case, the performance gain with such parameters should be quite noticeable. Perhaps the PS5 Pro will be able to allow gamers to fully enjoy games in 4K at 60 fps, which is far from always available on the PS5.

As for the release date, for now, it’s worth focusing on November 2024. Recall that Microsoft recently stated that it does not yet plan to release an accelerated version of the Xbox, and the current Series X was allegedly called the intermediate generation at the initial stage.
