A manual transmission will remain in Porsche 911 and 718 for now
Porsche has confirmed that it will continue to offer manual transmission Porsche 911 and 718 models for as long as possible.
While many other sports car manufacturers have abandoned manual transmissions over the past 10 to 15 years, including Ferrari and Lamborghini, Porsche has not given up and continues to produce what many consider to be the best manual transmissions available today. Speaking about the automaker’s commitment to manual transmissions, Porsche 911 and 718 boss Frank Moser said customer demand is the reason manual transmissions remain in the lineup.
Porsche remains true to the “mechanics”
“A manual transmission is always what a customer wants in a 911, so we have worked and are working as long as possible to keep the manual transmission,” Moser told The Drive. “This is true for the 911. That’s why we have the 911 T with manual transmission and now the 911 S/T with manual transmission. That’s because customers want manual gear shifting.”
Moser added that the automaker is working to retain manual transmissions for the current generation 911 and 718. Given that the 718 will later become an electric car, it will likely lose a manual transmission in the future.
Moser noted that the car manufacturer is not interested in creating a manual transmission for an electric vehicle, as Toyota is doing.
