Hackers attacked the servers of the Wikimedia Foundation
The executive director of Wikimedia.ru (supports the Russian-language version of Wikipedia) Stanislav Kozlovsky said that the difficulties with accessing Wikipedia were due to a DDoS attack on the servers of the non-profit Wikimedia Foundation.
Wikimedia said today: “The Wikimedia Foundation witnessed a DDoS attack on its servers over the weekend that affected regular traffic on Wikimedia sites from parts of the US and Europe, including Russia. The Foundation’s site reliability team immediately took the necessary countermeasures to resolve the issue.”
Problems with Wikipedia were due to a DDoS attack
On July 23, Downdetector, a service that quickly monitors website accessibility information, reported that Wikipedia had crashed. Some Russian users could not get to the web encyclopedia page. A few hours later, it became known that the Wikipedia website had restored work after a large-scale failure.
