Some innovations have already appeared in test builds
Microsoft is working on a rethinking of its browser and is preparing to release a more modern version of Edge with an improved user interface, additional features and improved performance.
According to reports from netizens, the Edge Phoenix project is an internal concept the company has been developing since the summer of 2022. It has some unusual features, some of which are already available in pre-release versions of Microsoft Edge.
Well-known informant WalkingCat, who was noted among other things for predicting the release of Windows 11 and widgets in it, has published a video demonstrating Edge Phoenix in action. According to him, this is a concept video from the Microsoft User Research group – with a new user interface and features
WalkingCat also noted that the project was meant to be an internal gathering of feedback from company employees on areas and priorities in the development of Microsoft Edge. Most “likes” collected function Split View, or Split Screen (Split screen). This feature has already begun testing among members of the Insider program.
Other Edge Phoenix ideas have not yet been implemented in browser versions available to ordinary users. For example, Microsoft is working on a Tab Activity Center feature with information about browser usage. You can think of the Tab Activity Center as a variant of the Screen Time feature in iOS (Digital Wellbeing on Android).
Microsoft is also considering turning Edge into a system-wide password manager, as well as allowing Edge to run during the initial Windows installation.
