Earlier this year, it became known that Tesla is busy with the Roadrunner project, in which the company has developed a new battery production system to significantly reduce the cost of producing electric vehicles. Little is known about Tesla’s new batteries, however. Now, on the Internet, there are perhaps the first images of Tesla battery cells. They were published by the Electric resource, citing an anonymous source of the images, and later the authenticity of the photos was confirmed by another source of the portal.

Tesla still does not disclose the characteristics of the new cells, but the published images still reveal some details. The new cell is roughly double the diameter of the Tesla 2170, which is currently used in Model 3 and Model Y electric vehicles and is manufactured by Panasonic at its Gigafactory in Nevada. The doubled diameter of the cell makes its volume four times larger. If the resulting volume is used efficiently, then more capacity can be obtained while reducing costs due to fewer casings and fewer cells in the package.

Tesla applied for a patent earlier this year for a new flat-electrode battery cell. The new cell design will reduce the internal resistance to the passing current, which will increase productivity.

Tesla is currently building a pilot production line to build new cells in Fremont, according to reports. In addition, in the future, Tesla plans to host a battery manufacturing system at its factory, which will be built in Texas.
