By the principle of operation, Qi2 technology is really similar to MagSafe
At CES 2023, it was announced that Apple is partnering with the Wireless Power Consortium (WPC) to create the next generation of the Qi wireless charging standard. It will be called Qi2.
The new standard aims to improve the efficiency and interoperability of the technology, so it will be based on magnets, as in Magsafe charging for the iPhone.
The WPC confirms that Qi2 technology is indeed similar to MagSafe in terms of how it works. As a result, Qi2 accessories will be perfectly matched with devices, which will increase energy efficiency and speed up charging. Qi2 will also work with MagSafe devices and accessories by default.
“Consumers and retailers tell us that they don’t understand which devices are Qi-certified and which devices claim to work with Qi but are not Qi-certified. This confusion can lead to poor user experience and even security issues,” says Paul Strusaker, chief executive of the Wireless Power Consortium. “Our standard assures consumers that their devices are safe, effective and compatible with devices from other brands. Qi2 will become the global standard for wireless charging and provide consumers and retailers with that assurance.”
The new Qi2 standard will replace its predecessor Qi. The WPC states that a billion Qi devices will be sold worldwide in 2023. The first certified Qi2 devices and accessories are expected to be introduced by the end of the year.
