Qualcomm Incorporated, Samsung Electronics and Huawei Technologies Co. have announced the arrival of the new MPEG-5 Essential Video Coding ( EVC ) codec.
MPEG-5 EVC will offer greater efficiency than previous standards. The companies involved talking about at least 25% higher compression than HEVC and without any loss in image quality.
The applications provided are numerous: in addition to the video, Ultra HD with HDR is also talk of 8K (where the higher compression is essential to not take up too much bandwidth streaming), actually virtual and reality increased.
The three sponsoring companies also believe that MPEG-5 EVC will be very useful if combined with 5G networks, so as to be able to stream high-quality content with all the benefits offered by the best compression.
The codec specifications were set in the form of Final Draft International Standard (FDIS) in late April by Moving Picture Experts Group (MPEG) as ISO / IEC 23094-1 standard.
Samsung, Qualcomm and Huawei will announce their respective license terms no later than two years from the date of publication of the FDIS.
The three giants have pledged to establish fair, reasonable and non-discriminatory terms.
MPEG-5 EVC will, therefore, be a possible competitor of AV1 (the “open” codec developed by Alliance for Open Media and already used by YouTube for 8K streaming) and of course also of HEVC.
