Released beta version of Microsoft Edge browser for Linux
The Microsoft development team has announced the release of the first beta version of its proprietary Edge web browser for Linux, built on the source code of the Chromium project. The browser is available as rpm and deb packages for Ubuntu, Debian, Fedora, and OpenSUSE.
For the first time, public testing of Microsoft Edge for Linux started at microsoftedgeinsider.com in October last year. For six months, the company has been releasing preliminary and alpha builds of the browser, but now the product development has reached the beta testing stage. The beta version of the web browser will be updated every 6 weeks. The timing of the final release of Microsoft Edge for the Linux platform has not been announced.
Recall that the features of Edge are built-in support for online services from Microsoft and many different enhancements that integrate the web browser into the ecosystem of software solutions of the software giant. In addition to Linux, browser previews are also available for Windows 7/8 / 8.1 / 10 / 10X, Windows Server, macOS, and HoloLens 2 mixed reality headsets.
According to the analytical company StatCounter, Microsoft Edge currently ranks third in the global desktop browser market with 8 percent of the audience. The first position is taken by Google Chrome (67.6% market share). The second most popular is Safari (9.9%).
