Microsoft Edge will get a special mode with optimal consumption of RAM and other resources
It became known that developers from Microsoft began testing a new feature called “Performance Mode” in their proprietary Edge browser. According to the available data, the new model is designed to optimize the resources consumed, including memory and energy.
“ Performance Mode helps you optimize speed, responsiveness, memory, CPU, and battery usage. Performance improvements may vary based on the individual capabilities of the device being used, ”Microsoft said in a statement.
At the moment, it is not fully known how exactly changing the performance settings affects the browser. Enabling this mode affects the operation of the “Sleeping tabs” function, which the browser uses to reduce resource consumption by putting inactive tabs to sleep. When “Productivity Mode” is activated, a five-minute timeout is automatically set to put inactive tabs to sleep.
The new model will be most useful when using Edge on laptops, as the optimized resource consumption can significantly extend the device’s battery life. This feature has become available to some users of the beta version of the Edge Canary browser. Besides, you can enable this mode by activating the corresponding option on the page of the browser’s experimental functions. At this stage, it is only available in Edge Canary. It is not yet known when the new feature will appear in stable versions of the browser.
