Remedy: Control is not a “big hit”, but the studio is not disappointed with sales

Remedy Entertainment CEO Tero Virtala told GamesIndustry that the adventure shooter Control, released in late summer 2019, is not seen by the studio as a “big hit” However, the sales didn’t upset the developers anyway.

“We are very pleased with the success of Control,” said Tero Virtala. “ It won Game of the Year awards, has sold over two million copies, and continues to sell, but two million is not yet a big success in our industry. When we talk about major hit games, we’re talking at the industry level – that’s what we’re aiming for

Besides, Control is currently available on Xbox Game Pass and was featured on PlayStation Plus in February. All this also provides the studio with opportunities for earning money, so the developer does not determine the project’s success only by the number of copies sold.

Virtala also revealed that Remedy Entertainment is currently split into several teams that are involved in five projects. The team that worked on Control is already busy with another major game. Also in development are two projects in the same universe, sponsored by Epic Games. The fourth team is working on a multiplayer shareware game codenamed Vanguard. And the fifth continues to campaign for the shooter CrossfireX in partnership with Smilegate Entertainment.

Control was released on PC, PlayStation 4, and Xbox One on August 27, 2019, followed by a Nintendo Switch release on October 30, 2020. On February 2, 2021, an improved version for the PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X, and S went on sale.
