Fans of the iconic film Jaws 2 recently celebrated its 45th anniversary, with Universal Pictures honoring the occasion by releasing a 4K UHD version of the movie last month. However, the anniversary is now tinged with sadness as news of actor Marc Gilpin’s passing at the young age of 56 emerged. Marc Gilpin, best known for playing little Sean Brody in Jaws 2, lost his battle with glioblastoma, a devastating brain cancer. The heart-wrenching news was confirmed by his sister, Peri Gilpin, beloved for her role as Roz on the hit sitcom Frasier.
Marc Gilpin’s journey in the world of entertainment began at a tender age. Born in Austin, Texas on September 26, 1966, he landed his first acting role at just four years old, featuring in a nationwide commercial for Exxon. His talent and charm soon led him to appear in the TV series Thunder and earn the title role in the family-friendly sci-fi comedy Where’s Willie?. However, it was his role as Sean Brody in Jaws 2 that truly thrust him into the limelight.
In Jaws 2, Marc Gilpin portrayed Sean Brody, the son of Chief Martin Brody, who was played by Roy Scheider. The first Jaws movie had different actors, Chris Rebello and Jay Mello, portraying the Brody children, but for the sequel, the roles were recast with Mark Gruner and Gilpin. Gilpin’s audition triumphed over hundreds of hopeful young actors, securing him the pivotal role of Sean at the age of eleven.
Following the success of Jaws 2, Gilpin’s talent continued to shine, leading to appearances in various TV shows and films. He graced the screens in CHiPs, Fantasy Island, Flying High, CBS Afternoon Playhouse, Silver Spoons, and China Beach. Notable movie roles included Earthbound, The Legend of the Lone Ranger, License to Kill (not related to the James Bond movie), Surviving, Right to Kill?, and She’s Out of Control.
After earning acclaim for his performance in Surviving, Marc Gilpin caught the eye of manager Jerry Silverhardt, who expressed a keen interest in signing him. However, Gilpin had a unique condition – he would only agree to be signed if his sister Peri was also represented. Such was the close bond between the siblings.
Despite his successful acting career, Gilpin chose to pursue a different path after 1989. Becoming a self-taught software engineer, he embraced the world of technology and contributed to various software patents through his work with start-up companies.
Tragically, Marc Gilpin is not the first sibling of the Gilpin family to leave us too soon. His sister April passed away at the age of 48 in 2017, and Patti left us at the age of 57 in 2020. He is survived by his wife of 24 years, Kaki, and their teenage sons, Spencer and Presley, and, of course, his beloved sister Peri.
