Renault will double sales of electrified vehicles in 2021
The French company Renault expects to more than double sales of its hybrid and electric vehicles in 2021. This is driven by the desire to increase the presence of sustainable vehicles in the market significantly.
With the tightening of legislation governing the emission of harmful substances into the atmosphere, companies have to switch to the production of battery-powered cars. Currently, the leaders of this market segment are the American company Tesla and the German concern Volkswagen. Against this background, Renault plans to sell about 150 thousand electric vehicles and about 200 thousand vehicles with a hybrid power plant this year. Officials from the automaker declined to comment on the matter.
The source notes that Renault’s plan to sell 350,000 electrified vehicles is comparable to Volkswagen’s forecast, which previously announced plans to sell 450,000 electrified vehicles this year. If we consider other brands owned by the VW concern, such as Seat and Audi, then the sales volume for 2021 should be about 1 million electrified vehicles.
Under new CEO Luca de Meo, unprofitable Renault is trying to achieve profitability by reducing the number of models produced and betting on the production of electric vehicles. According to the French company’s immediate plans, by 2025, 30% of Renault vehicles should be fully electric, and another 35% – hybrid.
