Replacing ray tracing and a head start: Digital Foundry analyzed the work of the Mafia remake on consoles

Digital Foundry specialist Thomas Morgan published a technical analysis of the console versions of Mafia: Definitive Edition on the Eurogamer website and the YouTube channel of the publication.

On PS4 Pro and Xbox One X, the remake runs at 1440p. At the same time, the Microsoft prefix is distinguished by the quality of shadows and shading, as well as higher performance compared to its main competitor.

The base PS4 and Xbox One run at 1080p and 900p, respectively, but the Sony device – the only one tested – lacks vertical sync, causing screen tearing.

In terms of performance, the Xbox One X performed best of all with a stable 30fps. On PS4 Pro, there are drops of up to 25 frames per second, while on standard models the counter can drop even lower.

Mafia: Definitive Edition was created on the basis of Mafia III, but compared to the 2016 release, it is noticeably prettier. In particular, Morgan was impressed by the lighting and reflections systems that simulate the effect of ray tracing using the software.

“Overall, this is one of the best – and least artifact-prone – solutions I’ve seen in this console generation. If this is possible on limited GPU hardware, then I’m wondering what Hangar 13 can do with hardware ray tracing in the future, ” Morgan said.

Mafia: Definitive Edition is available on PC, PS4, and Xbox One, but Digital Foundry considers it logical to release on PS5 and Xbox Series X. According to Morgan, the remake “laid the technological foundations for something more ambitious” – for example, the fourth Mafia.
