Resident Evil Village developers accused of plagiarizing one of the monsters
The director of the movie “Army of Frankenstein,” Richard Raaphorst, accused the developers of Resident Evil Village of plagiarism on his page on the professional social network LinkedIn. There are spoilers in the text.
This is one of the monsters, the design of which, according to Raaphorst, was borrowed and used by Capcom in its new shooter with horror elements without permission.
“In 2013, I directed my horror movie Army of Frankenstein. This is a mad monster movie filled with my creature designs. One of them was used – absolutely without demand or attribution in the newest Resident Evil, “ – said Raaphorst.
The similarity of the images lies in using a three-bladed propeller instead of the character’s head. At first glance, the two elements are indeed virtually indistinguishable from each other.
It is worth noting that the concept of a monster with an object instead of a head is quite common in horror movies (for example, the pyramid head from Silent Hill). Such similarity may well be explained by simple coincidence.
In addition, Resident Evil developers traditionally draw inspiration from other forms of entertainment. Among the landmarks of Resident Evil 7, for example, are called the films “The Texas Chainsaw Massacre,” “The Blair Witch,” “Saw,” and so on.
Resident Evil Village debuted on May 7 this year on PC (Steam), PS4, PS5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X and S, as well as Google Stadia. As the journalist PC Gamer found out, the game can be run without a discrete graphics card on a PC.
