After nearly 35 years of living together, Tom Ford’s husband Richard Buckley passed away last Sunday following a long illness. The fashion journalist died at the age of 72 in his and his partner’s house in Los Angeles, with his son Alexander John Buckley Ford at his side. “It is with great sadness that Tom Ford announces the death of his beloved husband,” she said. declared the designer in a note, with whom he had celebrated an intimate wedding in 2014.  The two met at a fashion show in 1986, when Buckley was working for WWD, and have never left since: “I went to a fashion show, and this silver-haired guy started staring at me with his piercing blue eyes.

After four weeks I already had the keys to his apartment “the designer had told me in 2012.

Richard Buckley was born in Binghamton, NY in 1948 and was raised in New York, France, and Germany. After graduating from the University of Maryland in Munich, he began pursuing a career in journalism in 1979 at New York Magazine. In 1982 he moved to Paris as the European editor of the Daily News-Record for Fairchild Publications, WWD’s male counterpart. In 1986, the year in which he met Tom Ford, the journalist was in New York because he was called by the editorial director John B. Fairchild, to fill the role of editor in the new magazine  Scene, and later at WWD.

The scene did not really take off as the editor expected, and after two years in the same publishing house, Richard Buckley joined Vanity Fair as a Social Editor, under the direction of Tina Brown. When he and Tom Ford moved to Milan in 1990, Buckley instead became the European editor-in-chief of Mirabella magazine, while Ford joined the Gucci design team. After some time the couple moved to Paris, where the journalist became editor-in-chief of Vogue Hommes International, but the two did not settle in the French capital for long: they also lived in London, New York, Santa Fe, and, in recent years, Los Angeles. Richard Buckley leaves her husband, Tom Ford, and son, Alexander John Buckley Ford, whom he had in 2012.
