Rocket League Authors Explained Why PlayStation 5 Won’t Get 120fps

Psyonix recently announced that the Rocket League will receive an update for next-gen consoles, but not all. While the Xbox Series X and Xbox Series S will feature 120fps, the PlayStation 5 will continue to play the game like the PlayStation 4 Pro: checkerboard 4K resolution at 60fps. The publication Push Square has found out the reason for this discrepancy between the versions.

As it turned out, the matter is in the number of necessary resources for implementation. On Xbox Series X and Xbox Series S, it only took a small patch to play the game at 120fps. The PlayStation 5 will have to fully port the Rocket League.

“This year, our team’s focus has been on the recent shareware transition and major updates such as the tournament system,” said Psyonix. – Because of this, we had to make difficult decisions about what else we could achieve. Enabling 120Hz mode on Xbox Series X | S was a matter of a small patch, but enabling it on PS5 requires a full port due to the way backward compatibility is implemented on the console, and unfortunately, this was not possible due to the fact that we focused on something else

This is not the first time this has happened on PlayStation 5. Action RPG Maneater supports transferring saves between Xbox consoles, but not PlayStation. In Star Wars: Squadrons on Xbox Series X and S is a regime with 120 frames per second, but not on the PlayStation 5. The reason is the same – the backward compatibility features of the new Sony console.

Rocket League is currently available on PC, PlayStation 4, Nintendo Switch, and Xbox One, as well as Xbox Series X, Xbox Series S, and PlayStation 5 via Backward Compatibility. An update for the new Microsoft consoles will be released later this year.
