Qualcomm’s new top-end platform will become more powerful – and more expensive
At this week’s event called Snapdragon Summit 2023, Qualcomm introduced the top-end single-chip systems Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 (for smartphones) and Snapdragon X Elite (for laptops running Windows). The company also reported that the powerful Oryon processor from Snapdragon X Elite next year will move to a new SoC for smartphones, that is, Snapdragon 8 Gen 4. It is logical to assume that having received a very powerful 12-core processor, Snapdragon 8 Gen 4 will become more expensive. These assumptions were confirmed by a Qualcomm representative.
Samsung Galaxy S25 and future flagships may be more expensive than current ones due to the price of the Snapdragon 8 Gen 4
Qualcomm Senior Vice President Chris Patrick said Qualcomm expects the price of the Snapdragon 8 Gen 4 to increase as the company strives to achieve ” amazing levels of performance ” from the new platform.
No one can say exactly how much Qualcomm single-chip systems cost manufacturers of finished devices, since this is a trade secret. However, if the company reports in a year (!) that the next generation of flagship SoCs will be more expensive than the current one, then it is obvious that Qualcomm customers will have to pay more for single-chip systems. If so, future flagships like Samsung Galaxy S25, Xiaomi 15, and Honor Magic7 may become more expensive.
