Samsung Electronics has announced the launch of a new carrier-grade 5G (vRAN) carrier-level radio access network solution that will be available this quarter. This solution provides a new option for mobile operators who seek to increase efficiency, reduce costs, and gain management benefits by deploying the 5G radio communications software infrastructure.

Samsung has a fully virtualized 5G RAN

Samsung 5G vRAN consists of a virtualized central unit (VCU), a virtualized distributed unit (VDU), and a wide range of radio units, providing a smooth transition to 5G. By replacing the dedicated baseband hardware used in the traditional RAN architecture with software elements on a universal computing platform, mobile operators will be able to scale 5G networks more easily, quickly add new features and have the flexibility needed to support multiple architectures.

According to the manufacturer, vRAN also helps reduce maintenance costs by switching to the x86-compatible COTS platform (commercial off-the-shelf). Samsung vRAN runs on COTS x86 servers, with or without hardware accelerators, depending on specific requirements, for example, overall bandwidth.
