Samsung is working on a subscreen camera for mainstream smartphones, reveals new patent

Over the past few years, smartphone manufacturers have struggled to increase screen footprint. As a result, the bezels around the displays are kept to a minimum. Now manufacturers want to try to get rid of cutouts for the front camera. ZTE has already introduced the first smartphone on the market with a camera located under the screen, and now Samsung has patented this technology.

According to LetsGoDigital, Samsung Display applied for a related patent called “Display Device” with the US Patent and Trademark Office in May 2020. The application details the implementation of a sub-screen camera in a smartphone. The South Korean tech giant plans to use a two-piece display. The first is a basic high-definition, high-quality conventional screen. The second part will receive a lower resolution and will be located directly above the front camera.

In the new filing, Samsung partially cites a similar patent from 2016, which suggests that the company is continuously improving the same technology. It is not yet known when Samsung will introduce the first smartphones with a sub-screen front camera, but it can be assumed that the new technology will be tested not on flagships, but on more massive A-series smartphones.
