Samsung patented its version of a smartphone with an outward-folding screen

The United States Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO) today, November 3, 2020, granted the South Korean company Samsung a patent for “Electronic device including flexible display”.

Samsung

The document describes another device in a book format. In this case, when folded, the flexible screen is outside, encircling the body. An optional rear display is not provided.

As you can see in the images, there are wide bezels above and below the display. However, if a commercial device is released on the basis of the proposed design, Samsung will most likely choose a different design, reducing the size of these frames to a minimum.

Above the flexible display is a system of cameras and sensors. The document says that it may include, among other things, an infrared sensor for recognizing users by face.

The patent describes in detail the features of the articulated joint. The presence of a 3.5 mm headphone jack is mentioned. In addition, the illustrations show the physical control buttons on one of the sides of the case.

The patent application was filed back in April 2018. It is quite possible that the device described in the document will remain only on paper. Maybe Samsung will release something similar in the future.
