Samsung to develop new flexible glass with Corning

Samsung’s next-generation Galaxy Z Flip and Galaxy Z Fold 2 foldable smartphones use ultra-thin Ultra-Thin Glass (UTG) from Samsung Display to protect their displays. In the future, Samsung intends to create its own folding glass technology, enlisting the support of the supplier of durable glass Corning for this purpose.

For the production of UTG glass, a glass substrate is used by the German company Schott, which has an exclusive contract with Samsung Display. And for the future folding glass division of Samsung Electronics IT & Mobile Communications, according to sources, the substrate will be used by Corning.

Corning is reportedly already developing flexible glass for internal use, but work on it began later than Schott. The American glassmaker has now received a large order from Samsung Electronics IT & Mobile Communications for a flexible glass substrate, sources said. A Corning spokesman confirmed to ETNews that the company is currently supplying a flexible glass substrate to a firm whose name he will not disclose.

Samsung’s smartphone division reportedly intends to develop its own foldable glass to encourage Samsung Display to lower the price of its panels.

Samsung Display currently only supplies UTG glass to Samsung Electronics, but it is expected to expand its customer base in the future, reducing reliance on the main consumer. Huawei recently placed an order with Samsung Display to supply OLED panels for its upcoming foldable smartphones, sources say. Samsung Display is expected to maintain its leadership in the global foldable display market for years to come.
