It plans to commercialize the new panels in about a year.

As you know, Samsung produces microLED displays for its 89-inch and 101-inch TVs, in addition, last fall it was reported that the company intends to adapt microLED technology for AR headsets. Now, South Korean sources have revealed that Samsung is going to commercialize microLED displays for smartwatches and use them in future Galaxy Watch models. Later, perhaps, this technology will spread to smartphone screens: it is possible that one of the successors to the Samsung Galaxy S23 will already have a microLED screen.

Panels made using microLED technology have a number of advantages over the now widely used OLED displays. So, microLED screens are noticeably brighter, have better contrast and high-quality color reproduction. In addition, the image on such a display is better distinguishable in direct sunlight. And finally, microLED panels are more energy efficient, which will allow smartwatches to have longer battery life.

According to South Korean insiders, Samsung Display set up a new team to work on microLED panels late last year. Its goal is to achieve the commercialization of new technology in the near future. The company hopes to achieve the goal in about a year, so the appearance of the first smart watch with a microLED screen should not be expected until next year. It can be either devices under its own brand Samsung Galaxy Watch or smart watches from Apple. Although, just yesterday we wrote that Apple is already busy developing its microLED screens for the new iPhone and Apple Watch.
