Shareware shooter Apex Legends surpasses 100 million players

Electronic Arts and Respawn Entertainment have announced that Apex Legends has surpassed 100 million unique players worldwide in Apex Legends Battle Royale. The free-to-play shooter has crossed an important milestone just two years after launching in February 2019.

The success of Apex Legends is one indicator that shareware battle royale shooters remain very popular, even though there have been enough projects from major publishers over the past couple of years. Activision Blizzard’s Call of Duty: Warzone has attracted over 75 million players in less than five months since launch. Last May, Epic Games said Fortnite had 350 million registered users (and that number has likely grown since then) …

Apex Legends currently has 16 playable heroes, three ever-changing maps, and seasonal events. Over the next few days, the developers from Respawn Entertainment promise to share new details about the project.

Apex Legends is out on PC, PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X and S, and Nintendo Switch.
