Citing reports from the Japanese media, the source recently announced that Sharp plans to spin off its display business into a subsidiary. It will be called Sharp Display Technology or SDTC. Although the start date of the new company was announced on October 1, Sharp’s website has no information about its creation yet.

SDTC will be based in the Japanese city of Kameyama. Sharp believes that having a separate company makes sense in terms of funding the development of microLED technology.

Sharp acquired JDI‘s LCD panel factory in Hakusan last month. The unused plant space will allegedly be set aside for the development and production of the microLED. In terms of area, this site is equal to the area of production occupied by the production of LCD panels for Apple.

Sharp also plans to move equipment from Kameyama to Hakusan. The Kameyama plant will be converted to produce panels for cars and medical equipment.

Display manufacturing accounts for 30% of Sharp’s revenue.
