Sharp unveils 120-inch 8K display: up to 120Hz, HDMI 2.1 and advanced backlight

Sharp unveiled a huge  8K8M-B120C display, which offers advanced backlight technology with 2048 dots of local dimming, plus HDMI 2.1. Considering the huge 120-inch size, the novelty is most likely intended for commercial use. However, consumers who are not constrained in finances can also pay attention to this model and use it for digital entertainment, for example, for next-generation game consoles.

The Sharp 8M-B120C is based on a 120-inch UV2A II LCD (presumably IPS / IGZO) with a resolution of 7680 × 4320 pixels and a refresh rate up to 120 Hz (only for 4K resolution). It also has a typical brightness of 600 cd / m2, a contrast ratio of 3500: 1, and a pixel response of 6 ms (gray to gray, GTG). The vertical and horizontal viewing angles are 176 degrees. The novelty supports HDR technology and uses 2048 LED direct backlight technology. Considering its large size and power consumption, the display is designed for continuous operation for up to 16 hours.

Sharp says the 8M-B120C’s screen can reproduce 1.07 billion colors and is capable of covering the majority of the ITU-R BT.2020 color space. At the same time, the company adds that the model has an increased red level to provide brighter colors. It is higher than the value stated by the BT.2020 standard.

Although the Sharp 8M-B120C is not a TV, it uses the ultra high definition technology found in the Sharp Aquos 8K TV. The technology scales the picture to the native display resolution and improves its quality. In addition, Sharp 8M-B120C can play music and video files.

The display’s HDM 2.1 connector supports 4K @ 120fps and 8K @ 60fps. There are also four additional HDMI-connectors, one D-Sub (VGA) for connecting to a PC, and a 3.5mm audio jack. In addition, the Sharp 8M-B120C is equipped with a 100Mbps Ethernet network module and two USB 3.0 ports.

For the novelty, support for Dolby Audio technology is announced. The model includes four 10W speakers and two 15W speakers. Analog and optical audio outputs are also available. Sharp 8M-B120C measures 2717 × 805 × 1979 mm, weight withstand – 206 kg.

The company will begin accepting orders for the new product at the end of September. The manufacturer has not yet announced the cost of the display. But considering the size and technology used in the Sharp 8M-B120C, it will be appropriate.
