Snapchat launched a TikTok competitor called Spotlight

The popular Snapchat messenger has a new feature called Spotlight, which lets you watch short videos in a vertically scrolling feed, just like it does on TikTok. The new function is intended to diversify the creative content of platform users, including through the small music videos they publish, as well as other materials that may be of interest to the audience.

According to reports, Snapchat uses special algorithms to select the most interesting content to be displayed to users on an individual basis. Videos appear in a new vertically scrolling feed and are ranked taking into account various factors, such as: how many people found this or that post interesting, how much time they spent watching it, whether they shared it with friends, etc. negative factors, for example, if users quickly stop watching a video or scroll through it without even starting playback. This approach will allow you to gradually adapt the feed to each specific user based on their preferences. Similarly, TikTok has a “For You” recommendation tab.

Users over the age of 18 have the option to subscribe to public profiles, so content authors can build a subscriber audience. Although users can write openly or privately to video creators, there is no public comment feature in Spotlight. This will probably help Snapchat avoid the hassle of moderating comments. However, the Spotlight feed itself will be moderated. All content posted by users must comply with the principles and rules of the platform.

As for the content recommended for publication, we are talking about vertical videos up to 60 seconds long. Videos can be supplemented with visual effects and music from the service’s own library. Published videos will remain in the feed until the author deletes them. Users will be notified of the new feature the next time they log in to the app as Spotlight is distributed.

The service intends to motivate users to create viral videos with monetary rewards, which will be distributed among the authors of popular content. Spotlight is currently available on Snapchat for Android and iOS in the US, Canada, Australia, New Zealand, UK, Ireland, Norway, Sweden, Denmark, Germany, and France. In other countries, the new feature will be launched at a later date.
