Messages are not deleted, but action is taken on them
The social network Twitter continues to fight against various manifestations of aggression. The company spoke about the success of its Freedom of Speech Not Reach program, which is quite unusual in its essence.
It implies the preservation of freedom of speech, that is, various messages that violate the relevant Twitter rules are not deleted. But at the same time, they are marked with a special label: “Visibility is limited: this tweet may violate Twitter’s rules against hateful behavior.” This tag significantly (by 81%) reduces the reach of the corresponding post on the social network and blocks ads next to the post.
As a result, more than a third of users themselves delete their messages that received the label, and only 4% file an appeal.
On Twitter, people are free to be themselves. We work every day to preserve freedom of speech while keeping our platform healthy. Since the launch of Freedom of Speech Not Reach, we have seen encouraging results. That is why we will be expanding the use of this program in the coming weeks.
Social network Twitter reported on the work of the Freedom of Speech Not Reach program
Today, more than 99.99% of Tweet impressions are related to content that is healthy or does not violate our policies. For a small minority of content that violates the rules, we apply proportionally appropriate enforcement measures. We will continue to remove posts that violate our policies the most, such as illegal content, and keep attackers off our platform.
During the life of the program, Twitter has issued such a label to more than 700,000 messages. At the same time, the program will be expanded in the near future. The platform will begin flagging messages that include malicious content that targets individuals, messages that encourage others to harass an individual or group of people, messages that threaten physical harm to others, and messages that encourage others to commit acts of violence or other harm.
